Driving Experience Courses are now available for persons wishing to experience driving a steam locomotive and train. Courses are available from June to end of October each year. Locomotive cab ride tickets are also available.
Driving Experience Courses are also available for driving a diesel locomotive and train throughout the year.
The Steam Locomotive currently available is
STEAM LOCOMOTIVE V1213~ A 135 tonne 1955 British built 2-8-2. One of 24 operated by the Western Australian Government Railways in the days of steam from 1955 to 1971, primarily for heavy coal trains and general heavy freight traffic. This locomotive now operates for the Pemberton Tramway Company hauling passenger and log trains.
The courses are conducted in Pemberton, Western Australia on the 21km railway line between Pemberton and Lyall, known as the Lambert-Pemberton Tourist Railway. This railway is steeply graded and runs through forest, rolling hills and farmland.
The courses involve basic tuition in locomotive, train and safety principles, then driving the steam locomotive under instruction, hauling two of our regular tourist train services to Eastbrook Siding and return. A shorter course driving one service only is also available.

The format of the driving courses is as follows:
1) A welcome to The Pemberton Tramway and an introduction to the Tramway staff.
2) An induction session, comprising safety, railway safe working, and various track, operational and locomotive fundamentals. (approximately 20 minutes)
3) Basic practical tuition in the workings of the locomotive, including the location and operation of the various apparatus. (approximately 20 minutes)
4) Approximately 2½ hours on the locomotive footplate, under qualified supervision, driving the locomotive hauling our tourist passenger train from Pemberton to Eastbrook Siding and return, for the morning or afternoon services. A total of approx 42kms. The basic course comprises one train service only.

FULL - $580.00 BASIC - $440.00
The Full Course duration is approximately 7 hours (including 1½ hours lunch break). The Basic Course duration is approximately 3½ hours.
Extended courses with additional driving or firing of the locomotive can be made available and purchased on request.
Courses commence at 9.00am and 1.00pm on Saturdays, and during school holidays on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Courses can also be made available on any day, by prior arrangement, however additional charges apply.

WAGR STEAM LOCOMOTIVE V1213
The V class is a 2-8-2 Mikado type, were designed to haul heavy coal trains
(1300 TONS) from the Collie mines to the East Perth and Fremantle power stations. They also operated heavy freight services over the York - Albany and Perth - Bunbury lines, All were retired following dieselisation in 1971. V1213 was the last WAGR Steam Locomotive to be saved from the scrap yard in April 1981.
